A fast-moving Can-Am Maverick X3 route from Dalanzadgad to Ulaanbaatar Airport. Across five days, the expedition crosses mountain gorges, steppe tracks and Gobi sand, reaching the Singing Dunes of Khongoryn Els, Bayanzag's Flaming Cliffs, Ongiin Khiid Monastery and the Baga Gazriin Chuluu granite massif.
Day 1 · about 280 km
Surface: around 160 km of gravel and steppe track, then mountain gorge and sand dunes. Difficulty: moderate.
The route runs through Dalanzadgad, Yolyn Am Gorge, the Gurvan Saikhan Mountains, steppe valleys and the Gobi Desert. The final stretch reaches Khongoryn Els—the Singing Dunes—along with the Khongoryn Gol River and Zulganai Ridge.
Day 2 · about 170 km
Surface: around 30 km of sand and 130 km of steppe track. Difficulty: moderate.
Leave the Singing Dunes for the ancient petroglyphs of Tsagaan Agui, depicting hunting scenes, animals and archaic symbols from the 2nd–1st millennia BCE. Continue to Bayanzag's Flaming Cliffs, a saxaul forest and the dinosaur-fossil plateau.
Day 3 · about 170 km
Surface: dirt tracks, with a possible river ford. Difficulty: moderate; expect dust and sections with few visible landmarks.
Travel to the ruins of the 18th-century Ongiin Khiid Monastery, the Ongiin Gol River and the surrounding rocky hills. On the steppe, groups of goitered gazelles may cross the buggy route.
Day 4 · about 280 km
Surface: dirt, crushed stone and gravel. Difficulty: moderate.
A long crossing through Central Mongolia's steppe to Baga Gazriin Chuluu, a natural granite labyrinth of rock, valleys and stone outcrops.
Day 5 · route finish
Final transfer from Baga Gazriin Chuluu to Ulaanbaatar and the airport. Departure timing and logistics are aligned with flight schedules and seasonal road conditions.

Day 1
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar, transfer to Blue Sky 5* and settle in. Explore the city and Gandan Monastery, then continue to Terelj National Park for its Buddhist monastery and Genghis Khan memorial complex. Dinner and downtime; spa is optional.
Day 2
Fly to Dalanzadgad, check into Grand Gobi 4*, receive the field kit and complete the Can-Am Maverick X3 briefing. The first 60–80 km off-road stage reaches the glacial Yolyn Am Gorge, with an 8–10 km hike. Return for dinner; spa is optional.
Day 3
A roughly 320 km off-road day through a mountain riverbed, glacier country, canyons, steppe and dunes. After a field lunch near Yolyn Am, continue to the Khongoryn Els dunes, rising up to 300 metres. Settle into camp for sunset barbecue and a night under the stars.
Day 4
Optional dawn photography, then a full day through the South Gobi with a camel caravan across the dunes. Lunch is served in the field. Climb a high dune before a sunset dinner among the sand.

A1TRAVEL field dining

When the expedition enters the Gobi sands, the team builds a full dining setting among the dunes. An entire lamb is slow-cooked over open fire—an homage to nomadic tradition—until it carries the warmth and smoke of the steppe.
Tables are set on traditional rugs, candles are lit and the desert changes colour. The menu brings local ingredients together with familiar European standards. The drive of the buggy gives way to quiet, open air and a precise dinner.
